I arrive at Forever Grey the next afternoon, determined to keep my mind clear of Troy and his game, but reality is I can’t stop thinking about either. I’m hoping a walk with my favorite pup will help me through the rest of the afternoon.

“Hey, Suzette!” I call, walking in and straight back to where Brutus usually is. But he’s not there, and my heart drops. “Where’s Brutus?”

“He’s been adopted,” she answers simply.

“When? I just walked him last week,” I say, feeling panicked as tears fill my eyes. I’m such an emotional wreck today, in all kinds of ways.

“New owner did the paperwork a while ago but needed some time to work out the logistics; otherwise he would have gone to your mom’s several months ago.”

I think about what she’s said. He was here a long time. I should have just adopted him myself and worked everything out later.

Disappointed, I don’t let it keep me from taking two dogs with me for a jog. Bianca is away with Dex this weekend, so it’s just me this time. Guess even she knew it would be better to keep her distance today.

My mind is lost in a mixture of thoughts as I make my way through the park. By the time I get back to Forever Grey, Suzette looks upset. Checking the clock, I see it’s past the usual time she locks up for the day.

I quickly help with the dogs and apologize for being gone so long. She brushes me off since it’s the first time I’ve made her wait.

Walking back home, I feel my phone buzz in my pocket. Pulling it out, I see it’s a text from Troy.

Troy: You’re dating a winner!

Troy: <Picture of him kissing a football>

I groan; he looks good. Sexy and sweaty and gorgeous.

Me: Congrats baby!!

Troy: I want your ass.

Me: You’re mean to it all the time.

Troy: Winner’s choice… I want your ass tonight.

Me: Uhhhh…

Troy: First time you’ve ever been speechless.

Me: More like terrified.

Troy: Can’t wait to see you. Wish you’d been here.

Me: Me too. Proud of you though.

Troy: Love you. I’ll see you soon.
